What is WHOIS?
WHOIS (pronounced "who is") is a query and response protocol used for querying databases that store the registered users or assignees of an internet resource, such as a domain name or an IP address block.
What’s in a WHOIS record?
- Registrar: The company where the domain was purchased (e.g., Cloudflare, Namecheap).
- Expiry Date: When the domain subscription ends.
- Nameservers: Which servers are directing the traffic for the domain.
- Contact Info: Often redacted today due to GDPR/Privacy laws, but historically included the owner's name and email.
